Tattoos were once a rarity, occasionally seen on a person’s arms or neck, and they always drew attention. Today, tattoos are so commonplace that no one even bothers to notice them. In the last decade or so, they have become so popular and people are seen with tattoos all over the body, and the spectator often wonders as to how someone could have spent so much time and endured so much pain to get their bodies tattooed.

A tattoo is an injection of colored indelible ink into the skin, forming designs, patterns, names for identification, or pictures that are permanent. The ink seeps into the skin through tiny holes, made by a needle connected to a small machine with tubes that are filled with the ink. The needle pierces the skin continuously, with bits of ink spreading gradually. The whole process can take hours, depending on the design and size of the tattoo, and the darker the tattoo means the greater the amount of ink injected. The ink tends to fade over time and hence, there is a tendency to use dark ink in larger amounts. The process is not pain free but people seem to derive pleasure out of it. First started by the Eurasians during the Neolithic Age, this practice spread with the expansion of civilization, and has for centuries been followed all over the world. It is now a fad extremely popular with the younger generation since it seems to enhance their “cool dude” image. While getting a tattoo, few would consider the possibility of a time when they may not want it any more. But for thousands, this happens often, and they look for ways of tattoo removal. Some regret having given in to the temptation of getting a tattoo, some want to have it removed to get a new design, some may need to do so for a new job they are applying for, and still others need to get the group tattoo removed since they no longer associate with it. There could be an endless number of reasons why people opt to remove tattoos, but the fact remains that tattoo removal is far more expensive and painful than getting one in the first place. The benefit of the advancement of science and technology is that there are now scientific ways of making tattoos and similar ways to remove them as well.
